Optimizing RAG Performance

Chunking Configuration

Chunk Size determines how documents are split:

Settings → Workspace → Document Processing:

  • Chunk Size: 400-800 characters (default: 500)
  • Chunk Overlap: 50-100 characters (default: 50)

Guidelines:

Small Chunks (200-400):

  • Pro: Precise retrieval
  • Con: May miss context
  • Best for: FAQs, short documentation

Medium Chunks (400-800):

  • Pro: Balanced context and precision
  • Con: General tradeoff
  • Best for: Most use cases (recommended)

Large Chunks (800-1500):

  • Pro: More context per chunk
  • Con: Less precise retrieval
  • Best for: Long-form content, books

Similarity Search Tuning

Top K (Number of Retrieved Chunks):

Settings → Workspace → RAG Settings:

  • Top K: 3-10 chunks (default: 5)

Low (3): Fast, focused answers Medium (5-7): Balanced High (10+): Comprehensive, slower

Similarity Threshold:

  • 0.3: Very permissive (more results)
  • 0.5: Balanced (recommended)
  • 0.7: Strict (only very relevant)

Query Enhancement

Enable Query Rewriting:

Settings → Workspace → Advanced:

  • Query Enhancement: On

Rewrites user queries for better embedding matches.

Example:

User: "How do I deploy Docker?"

Enhanced: "Docker deployment installation setup guide tutorial"

Retrieves more relevant documents.

Effective Usage Patterns

Asking Good Questions

Bad Question:

What is Docker?

Good Question:

According to the documentation, what are the recommended steps for deploying a Docker container with persistent storage and health checks?

Better Question:

Using the homelab setup guide, show me how to configure a Docker Compose file for a PostgreSQL database with automatic backups.

Using Citations

Enable Citations:

Settings → Workspace → Show Citations: On

Cited Response Example:

According to the Proxmox Setup Guide (page 12), LXC containers are created via:
1. Datacenter → Create CT
2. Configure resources
3. Select template

Source: proxmox-setup.pdf, page 12, chunk 45

Click citation to view source document section.

Multi-Document Queries

Compare the Docker networking approaches described in the Docker Guide and Kubernetes Guide.

Performance Optimization

Embedding Performance

GPU Acceleration:

environment:
  - EMBEDDING_DEVICE=cuda
  - EMBEDDING_BATCH_SIZE=32 # Process 32 chunks at once

CPU Optimization:

environment:
  - EMBEDDING_THREADS=8
  - EMBEDDING_BATCH_SIZE=8

Vector Database Optimization

LanceDB Settings:

environment:
  - VECTOR_DB=lancedb
  - LANCEDB_CACHE_SIZE=1000 # Cache 1000 queries

Index Optimization:

For 10,000+ documents:

environment:
  - LANCEDB_INDEX_TYPE=IVF_PQ
  - LANCEDB_NPROBES=10

Document Processing

Parallel Processing:

environment:
  - DOCUMENT_PROCESSOR_THREADS=4

Processes 4 documents simultaneously.

Troubleshooting

Issue: Slow Document Upload

Solution:

  1. Reduce chunk size (faster processing)
  2. Enable GPU for embeddings
  3. Increase parallel threads
  4. Use smaller embedding model (all-minilm-l6-v2)

Issue: Inaccurate Answers

Solutions:

  1. Increase chunk size for more context
  2. Increase Top K (retrieve more chunks)
  3. Lower similarity threshold
  4. Use better embedding model (mxbai-embed-large)
  5. Re-chunk documents with different settings

Issue: Out of Memory

Solution:

environment:
  - EMBEDDING_BATCH_SIZE=4 # Reduce from 32
  - VECTOR_DB_CACHE_SIZE=100 # Reduce cache

Or use CPU instead of GPU:

environment:
  - EMBEDDING_DEVICE=cpu

Next Steps

Best Practices

  1. Organize Early: Create workspaces before uploading
  2. Test Chunking: Experiment with chunk sizes for your content
  3. Curate Sources: Quality > Quantity for documents
